I should probably immediately clarify that I do not intend to join Silent Watch, at least not in the long term. My name is Robert Poreda, I currently attend the University of Oklahoma. One of my teachers has given me an assignment to analyze a community. I would analyze my own guild (Strength in Honor) but I'm not allowed to analyze a community that I am part of. I would like permission to ask some of this guild's members some questions to help write my paper. To this end I'm applying for temporary guild membership so that I can easily communicate with Silent Watch guildies. If everyone is ok with being put under a magnifying glass my questions will consist of some interviews (in-game and/or through emails/forum), maybe some polling on the forums and perhaps recording guild chat for a certain amount of time. Most of the information that I'm after will cover things like: guild history, guildy behavior towards other guildies and non-guildies, raid schedule, etc. For some of my questions I will need to talk to the guild master or some people who have been with the guild for a long time (preferably since its beginning). Anyone who wants more info on this is free to ask any question they like, my assignment prohibits collecting information from someone without their consent/knowledge. Information for this assignment can be given anonymously.
About me: I've been a happy member of SiH since January of 2006. I don't get to play WoW very much during the weekdays but usually get my daily frost for 2 or 3 of my toons. My interests aside from WoW are Mech. Engr (my major), programming (C, C++ and a few others), chess and Judo although I don't practice it any more. Medivh is the only server that gets a significant amount of my attention. I have 6 80's on this server: Evolon (warrior, main spec: prot, offspec: fury), Kroggoth (warlock, main spec: destro, offspec: demo), moltor (priest, main spec: disc, offspec: shadow), Ronmorgun (shaman, main spec: enhancement, offspec: resto), Voodeedoo (hunter, main spec: marksman, offspec: BM) and Evolent (DK, main spec: unholy, offspec frost). The warrior and priest hover pretty close to 5k in gear score going by the addon. The lock is almost at 5100. The remaining 3 toons are relatively new. The hunter and shaman have gear scores of about 4500. The DK is around 3700. I am not certain if I play enough to keep up with your raid schedule. Additionally SiH does not like to have members dual-guilding. But if on a given night you all find yourselves short a raid member and I happen to be free I'll be glad to join.[/i] |

| I dont mind answering questions for friends, but tbh, I'd want to get to know you more before I'd be comfortable with someone polling me in game and recording information about me. No offense... |

| Correct me if I am wrong, but from that post it doesn't really seem to be personal information that he is looking for, but more like interactions and such. This project looks more like something having to do with group dynamics than anything else. |

| The paper that I'm writing is supposed to answer the question: what makes this discourse community a discourse community? A discourse community is a group of people who have some combination of history/language/mannerisms/dress/etc. that make their community unique. Guild dynamics is definitely a big part of what I'm trying to find, but there would be some simple factual questions in the polls as well. They would be demographic information like age, sex, ethnicity (optional), hours spent playing WoW, etc. I can post the final paper on the forums for your review. But to be clear, no one has to know exactly who gives me input for this paper. And I'd be more than happy to meet with anyone (in-game I suppose) to talk things over. |

Gotta love assigning a Discourse Community paper to a MECH major.
Obviously being groomed for Congress. |

| Hey Evolon, I was the guy that you spoke to in game. You are free to post questions on the forum (although, as I stated, I do not know what kind of response you will get), however giving you access to our member forums or a temp invite to the guild is no going to be in the cards. |

| I would also like to interview a few of your members. Are there any problems with me snagging down a few of you guildies and interviewing them if they're ok with it? |
